En av de dominerande blommande arterna var blågrönalgen Nodularia spumigena som konstaterats vara giftig. Blomningama var en följd  blå-grönalgen Nodularia spumigena. Dessa ”mördaralger” är egentligen cyanobakterier som trivs i bräckt vatten. När katthårsalgen, Nodularia, blommar bildar den långa kedjor av celler som ser ut som rabarbersoppa. Det är främst dessa algblomningar som kan vara giftiga för djur och barn som råkar få i sig mycket av vattnet. Det finns fem arter av nodularia i Östersjön, men det är endast Nodularia spumigena, som finns i hela Östersjön. Nodularia spumigena blommar och täcker stora delar av Östersjön.
